Many organizations use special settings to run Internet Explorer on a corporate intranet. These settings can be as simple as specifying a "proxy server" to allow access to the World Wide Web. A proxy server acts as a security barrier between your internal network (intranet) and the Internet, keeping other people on the Internet from gaining access to confidential information on your internal network.
Or you can use automatic configuration settings specified in a file created by your system administrator to run Internet Explorer on your corporate system. The file might include settings for Internet Explorer options, such as which home (start) page to use, or configuration settings for the proxy server.
To begin setting up your corporationÆs computers, choose one of the following topics:
Configure your computer to use a proxy server for Internet access
Automatically configure Internet Explorer on a corporate system
If you are administering a corporate intranet, you can obtain the Internet Explorer Administrator's Kit (IEAK) from Microsoft. The IEAK contains all the information you need to customize Internet Explorer installations for your organization. You can create automatic configuration files, create setup cabinets with the Internet Explorer components you want installed, and specify default home pages and links. For more information, see the Microsoft Web site.
